Mahjong beginner essentials from Meno Mahj & Miles

If Mahjong seems to be everywhere lately, you’re not imagining it.
What started as curiosity for many of us has quickly turned into game nights, lessons, group chats, new friendships—and perhaps a little Mahjong shopping obsession. 🀄💕
But when you’re first learning American Mahjong, figuring out what you actually need can be confusing.
Do I need racks? What about pushers? What’s the mat for? Which Mahjong set should I buy? And why are there suddenly so many adorable Mahjong accessories I didn’t know I needed?

If you’re ready to join the Mahjong fun, here are five things I’d start with.
1. A Mahjong Set You Love 🀄
Obviously, we have to start with the tiles.
For American Mahjong, look for a complete set designed specifically for American play. You’ll generally want your set to include the tiles needed for American Mahjong along with dice and other basic accessories.
But here’s my other piece of advice:
Buy a set that makes you happy.
Mahjong sets have become absolutely beautiful. You’ll find everything from traditional designs to colorful, modern sets that look gorgeous sitting on your table.
If you’re going to spend hours playing with friends, there’s nothing wrong with choosing tiles that reflect your personality.

2. A Good Mahjong Mat
A Mahjong mat might seem optional when you’re starting out, but I quickly understood why players love them.
A mat gives you a comfortable playing surface, helps protect your table, and can soften the sound of tiles being shuffled.
And let’s be honest—Mahjong night is even more fun when the table looks beautiful.
I especially like mats that are easy to roll or fold because they’re much easier to bring along for a girls’ weekend or vacation.
Because eventually, you know what’s going to happen…
The Mahjong is coming with us.
3. Racks & Pushers
If your Mahjong set doesn’t already include them, you’ll probably want racks and pushers.
The rack holds your tiles upright so you can easily see your hand.
Pushers make it easier to move your wall of tiles forward without sending tiles flying across the table—which becomes particularly helpful once everyone gets comfortable with the rhythm of the game.
You’ll find traditional racks as well as some really pretty acrylic options.

4. The Current National Mah Jongg League Card
This one is important.
American Mahjong is generally played using an annual card published by the National Mah Jongg League that contains the hands and combinations used for that year’s play.
Because the card changes annually, make sure you’re using the current year’s card when playing with your group.
Rather than buying this through a random marketplace listing, I recommend ordering your official card directly from the National Mah Jongg League.
Once you start playing, you’ll understand why everyone spends so much time staring at that little card!
5. Something to Carry Your Mahj
This might not be essential for your very first game—but if you become hooked, you’ll probably want one quickly.
A good Mahjong bag or carrying case makes it much easier to take your tiles to:
💕 A friend’s house
🀄 Mahjong night
🏖️ The beach house
✈️ A girls’ getaway
🚢 A cruise
🌴 Vacation
And this is where Mahj and Miles really come together.
I love the idea that Mahjong doesn’t have to stay around the kitchen table. It’s something we can pack up and bring along on our adventures.
BONUS: The Things You Don’t Need…But Will Probably Want 😉
Once you enter the world of Mahjong, you’ve been warned.
There are some seriously cute accessories out there.
Think:
- Mahjong-themed cocktail napkins
- Tile bags
- Score accessories
- Mahjong tumbler
- Hostess gifts
- Mahjong jewelry
- Game-night serving pieces
- Travel accessories
Do you need them to play?
Absolutely not.
Will some of them eventually end up at your house?
I’m guessing yes. 😂
But Here’s What You Really Need..
Three other women.
That’s the best part.
Yes, Mahjong challenges our brains. Yes, learning something new during midlife feels fantastic. And yes, shopping for beautiful tiles is fun.
But what I’m discovering is that Mahjong is really about connection.
It’s about sitting around a table without staring at our phones.
It’s laughter.
It’s conversation.
It’s learning.
It’s meeting new people.
It’s having something on the calendar to look forward to.
And during this chapter of life—when friendships, families, careers, bodies, priorities, and even our sense of ourselves may be changing—that kind of connection feels especially meaningful.
That’s What Meno Mahj & Miles Is About
Meno represents this wonderfully complicated midlife and menopause chapter.
Mahj represents learning, playing, gathering, and keeping our minds engaged.
And Miles represents continuing to explore the world.
Put them together and you get something I’m becoming increasingly passionate about:
Women embracing this chapter instead of simply getting through it.
I want us taking the trip.
Learning the game.
Making the friend.
Trying something new.
Laughing louder.
And putting a few more stamps in our passports while we’re at it.
Because maybe midlife isn’t about slowing down at all.
Maybe we’re just getting to the good part. 💕
